Born in London in 1969 Jonquil Cook produces stoneware ceramics from her studio in Woolwich Dockyard, south of the river Thames. Jonquil specialises in detailed sgraffito carved decoration, a technique adapted from those she uses in printmaking.
Recurrent themes appearing on the relief surface of her work; swimming koi carp, trees, wild grasses and umbellifers that have been developed in recent years from close observation of the local natural environment during lockdown dog walks.
The jugs, platters, bowls, mugs and vases produced are a combination of throwing and hand-building. The pieces are coated with liquid oxide coloured clay, slip, and then allowed to dry to the leather hard stage before being carved, free hand, to reveal the raw clay body beneath. All glazes are non-toxic, food safe and each piece is entirely functional.
