Somerset House, London by David Richardson

A plein air ink, pencil and watercolour painting.

Perched on my trusty fold-out stool, I settled down to sketch this beautiful arched entrance at Somerset House. The shadowed portal framed a wonderful contrast, opening onto the brightly lit courtyard beyond.
   As I drew, tourists and art lovers wandered past, with the occasional compliment coming my way.
   Somerset House is a grand neoclassical building complex on the south side of the Strand in central London, overlooking the River Thames. The courtyard hosts a wonderful variety of events throughout the year, from art exhibitions and music concerts to winter ice skating. Today, it was buzzing with a print festival.
   In the midst of sketching, one of the print festival entrants asked me to look after his work while he ferried it through to its destination. A little unexpected multitasking to add to the day!
