A plein air pencil, ink and watercolour painting. I drew this while leaning against the Bank of England a few years ago.
Known as the father of English banking, Sir Thomas Gresham founded the Royal Exchange in 1566 as London’s first purpose-built centre for trading stocks. The original building and its successor were both destroyed by fire.
The present building, completed in 1844, boasts an imposing eight-column entrance. Trading continued until it was damaged during the Blitz in 1941. After a brief spell as home to the Mermaid Theatre, it returned to financial use in 1982.
I remember sketching here when I first came to London. Since 2001, the building has been transformed into a luxury shopping and dining destination, featuring in films such as Mary Poppins Returns and Bridget Jones’s Diary.
