A plein air pencil and watercolour painting.
After attending a carol concert here last Christmas, I thought this ornate Baroque church would make a wonderful subject to draw. Built between 1714 and 1723, St Mary-le-Strand stands on the newly pedestrianised Strand, its recent renovation finally revealed with the scaffolding removed.
I sketched from the seating area opposite, including King’s College London and a quirky set of old buildings attached. A constant hive of busy students passed by. As the sun moved, dramatic shadows spread across the buildings and paving, giving me the perfect opportunity to capture the changing light.
