New Wimbledon Theatre by David Richardson

£380.00

A plein air pencil, ink and watercolour painting

Opened in 1910, the New Wimbledon Theatre is a Grade II listed building that hosts a wide variety of entertainment, from musicals and pantomimes to comedy and drama. Over the years, many famous stars have graced its stage, including Gracie Fields and Marlene Dietrich, while Lionel Bart’s Oliver!is among the notable productions associated with the theatre. More recently, the venue was used as a rehearsal space for bands preparing to perform at Wembley Stadium for Live Aid in 1985.
I drew the theatre perched opposite me on the corner of the main road, capturing it on yet another bright, sunny day. This intricate red-brick Edwardian building, designed in the Baroque style, is crowned by an elegant green dome and the golden statue of Laetitia, which stands proudly above the surrounding streetscape.
