The Police's Sting digital portrait by Stella Tooth

Sting is a British musician, singer, songwriter and actor.  He was frontman, songwriter and bassist for The Police from 1977 to ‘86. In his early career, Sting played jazz in his spare time with the Phoenix Jazzmen, where he got his nickname from his habit of wearing a black and yellow jumper with hooped stripes. He supports his hometown Newcastle United football club, who have a black and white strip. This explains my use of black, yellow and white in the background of my image,

My image is inspired by a photo by rock photographer Solomon N’Jie taken backstage as Sting arrived at a circus tent on Tooting Common in 1980 to play a gig in front of 5,000 people.

Sol says, “Stella has really captured the Sting ‘stare’ which came from his reluctance to be photographed when he arrived backstage at his own gig. Sting has always been stylish dresser and his flamboyant side comes shining through in this painting.”
