Leadenhall Market, London by David Richardson

£150.00

A plein air pencil, ink and watercolour painting.
Leadenhall Market is tucked away in the heart of London’s financial district. I drew this view for a book I was creating, and it’s a particularly magical spot, having featured in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as the entrance to Diagon Alley.
The market’s history dates back to 1321, when it traded in meat, poultry and game. In 1411, former Lord Mayor Richard “Dick” Whittington acquired the site and gifted it to the City of London Corporation, which still manages it today.
The beautiful wrought-iron and glass-roofed structure we see today was designed by Sir Horace Jones, who also designed Tower Bridge, and completed in 1881. It's now mainly pubs, artsan shops and eateries popular with tourists.
