Description A plein air watercolour.
Often intrigued by the work of graffiti artists, whose creations can become famous, newsworthy statements, I stumbled across this remarkable piece of urban street art while wandering around Shoreditch.
Hidden away from the main road, this massive collaborative mural featured beautifully painted zebras, birds and lush vegetation alongside logos, symbols and words whose meanings were unknown to me. The exposed pipework, windows and air-conditioning units on the backs of these Victorian buildings were seamlessly woven into the colourful artwork, creating a scene that took time to fully appreciate.
I sat sketching for many hours, with so much detail to capture. Numerous tour groups arrived, and being surrounded by people made the task more challenging. From their guides, I learnt that some areas are known as 'free walls', where the artwork can change from week to week. Only the most intricate pieces by well-known artists are left untouched.
