The tile painting, Blue Fugue saw life during the lockdown and was part of the Isolation series created during this time. I chose the colour blue to suit the mood of the time and named the work after a song title as listening to music while working became essential.
Originally from a life drawing, and a re-interpretation of my painting Starry Night 3, the masked woman leans on her chair in a dark interior. In her private contemplative world, the woman’s eyes seem unfocussed, and not do meet our gaze. Is she daydreaming of the world outside the grille where the sun still shines? In this image, enhanced by the use of dark, sombre colours, blacks and greys and deep blues, I try to capture the sense of aloneness and loss of the normal, ordinary world we took for granted.
