The Oval Cricket Ground, Kennington London by David Richardson

A plein air watercolour.

   The iconic The Oval cricket ground is only a ten-minute walk from Vauxhall Station. I arrived early to secure a good position with the famous gasholder and the Pavilion both in view.

Glamorgan were playing Surrey in a one-day cup match. Fans arrived gradually, slowly filling the seats, though only to a fraction of the ground’s capacity. When the match began, the beers started flowing. I couldn’t keep up with the score; I was too busy capturing the players, the crowd and the surrounding buildings.

   By 3 p.m. the sky had darkened dramatically. I quickly gathered my belongings and dashed for cover just before the heavens opened. Fortunately, I had already captured what I had come for. What a pleasant way to spend the day: watching cricket, sketching and soaking up the atmosphere of The Oval.
