– SoldI painted this portrait of a whirling dervish performing in the central square of Sharm el Sheikh with the heady backdrop of music from traditional instruments and incense. I was one of 100 artists from Europe and the Middle East invited to take part in Egypt’s first art biennale held in the city in 2013. It was an amazing time, meeting and working shoulder-to-shoulder with so many artists in different styles and media and with such different cultural references. I was thrilled to win the Judges’ Prize, awarded in a televised awards ceremony for a series of portraits I painted of Egyptian dignataries, a Tuareg and an Egyptian bride.
