The tightrope walker busker portrait by Stella Tooth

It was her face that attracted me, whited up against a backdrop of pastel and terracotta-coloured palazzi over the Rialto bridge from St Mark’s Square. Masks are so Venice, as  is the tradition of dressing up.  So the fact that she was dressed in a maid’s uniform, haired tied back in a turban was both apt and beguiling.
