British singer, songwriter and lead vocalist of Queen, Freddie Mercury had a four-octave vocal range. He studied art in west London and used these skills to design heraldic arms for Queen, based on the band’s star signs which features Freddy’s favourite colour – yellow – and red. He regularly wore yellow military jackets on stage.
Yellow, in heraldry, stands for honour and loyalty (which I use here to signify Mercury’s relationship with his fans) and red (which he's wearing) for courage. To these I add purple, meaning regal - a nod to the band’s name.
My digital painting is inspired by a photo by Getty photographer Solomon N'Jie.
Sol says, “Freddie Mercury was renowned throughout his career for live performances, delivered with a distinct theatrical style, that always generated crowd participation. This picture captures Freddie, the man who could dominate any stage ... while clasping a broken microphone stand.”
