Prince digital portrait by Stella Tooth

STH00617

£80.00

Prince was an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his exuberant, androgynous persona and wide vocal range. His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984) was the soundtrack to his film acting debut of the same name.

In the middle of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol (known to fans as the ‘Love Symbol’). In 2017 Pantone and the Prince estate announced the creation of the standardised custom colour ‘Love Symbol #2’ in his honour. Their Ultra Violet is very close to that colour and the company said Prince was part of the inspiration for the choice. I used it here alongside ‘gold’ between his palms symbolising success.

The artwork is based on a photo by rock photographer Solomon N’Jie on the Prince and the Revolution Parade Tour 12 – 14 August 1986 Wembley Arena.  Sol says, “One of the great all-round talented artists. Prince could sing, play guitar, compose songs, dance and was a natty dresser. His stage presence was awesome and this painting captures his melodic interaction while staring out at the audience”.
