Eric Clapton CBE is a legendary British rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He was a member of The Yardbirds and later formed the power trio ‘Cream’ and joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. His hit song ‘Layla’, is featured in this digital portrait to show the man behind the stage persona. Clapton wrote ‘Layla’ inspired by the classic Persian poem about unrequited love, Layla and Manjun - referencing the then unrequited love he felt for Patty Boyd, his close friend George Harrison's wife.
The digital painting is based on a photo by rock photographer Solomon N’Jie of Clapton playing a Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar at Wembley Arena 5 March 1985. Sol says, “Been a fan of Eric Clapton since the early days with 461 Ocean Boulevard a particular favourite of mine. Eric played his Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar at this Wembley Arena gig and the image captures his unique stance and ‘slow hand’ playing style”.
