'Bartmann or Bellarmine jugs were made in the Rhineland region of Germany in the 16th and 17th centuries and imported into London via the River Thames. The name is taken from the German word Bartmann meaning ‘bearded man’ and the unique faces often represented the mood of the potters, at the time of manufacture, both 'happy and grumpy', the uniqueness of the unusual face fragments is the inspiration for this artwork by Ed.
