Prince was an American singer-songwriter known for his exuberant, androgynous persona and wide vocal range. He produced his own albums pioneering the Minneapolis sound. His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984) was the soundtrack to his film acting debut of the same name.
In the middle of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol (known to fans as the ‘Love Symbol’). In 2017 Pantone and the Prince estate announced the creation of the standardised custom colour ‘Love Symbol #2’ in his honour. Pantone’s Ultra Violet is very close to that colour. I used it in this digital painting in the background, alongside ‘gold’ between his palms, the colour of success.
My artwork is based on a behind the scenes photo by rock photographer Solomon N’Jie, “One of the great all-round talented artists. Prince could sing, play guitar, compose songs, dance and was a natty dresser. His stage presence was awesome and this painting captures his melodic interaction while staring out at the audience”.
