Heather Tobias joins Skylark Galleries roster of small screen stars as puppeteer and to record the voice of a character in Monty and Co – a new preschool series for children on the BBC.
Produced by Pipkins Productions, Monty and Co is a puppet show on CBeebies about an eclectic group of characters who live together above a curio shop.
Monty, Lulu, Eddie (a blue elephant voiced by Heather), Gabriella and Sam have comedy musical adventures at their family shop Monty & Co, where they mend, reinvent and recycle everything from broken clocks to musical instruments, and learn to get along together despite their differences.
The team behind the series include puppeteer Nigel Plaskitt (The Muppet Christmas Carol), BAFTA Children’s Award-winning writer Gail Renard (Custer’s Last Stand Up) and former Jim Henson Company and Disney puppet designer Paul Jomain (Bambaloo, Bunnytown), who use knitwear materials and plush fabrics to give the characters a soft and huggable look.
Like so many artists, Heather also has another career as an actress. In Monty and Co she not only voices Eddie but is also a puppeteer and makes an appearance as herself as Mrs Rainey.
The 34 part series is currently running on CBeebies on Saturdays and Sundays at 1.45pm. It is also available on iplayer.
Heather, who now spends a greater proportion of her time in her artist studio, where she has her ceramics kiln, said, “It was wonderful working with a team I’ve worked with before – on Pipkins, where I did the voice of pig. It’s been an exciting project to work on – at the same time as being part of Skylark Galleries’ transformation into an online shop, a website hub, with artists’ own shops attached, and preparations being made to reopen its physical gallery on the South Bank.“
