Caroline Nuttall-Smith is a ceramicist and printmaker based in Greenwich.

She studied at Chelsea School of Art and then at Central Saint Martins. She graduated with a degree in Textile Design in 1989. She then worked for many years as a freelance textile designer for fashion and furnishing fabrics.

Caroline first got into ceramics about 15 years ago. She now works at Thick as Milk studio in Woolwich. She hand builds in stoneware clay and for the surfaces she explores abstract mark making using textures and mono print techniques with colour clay slips and oxides. At the next stage she uses matt and shiny glazes and wax resist to create different surface effects. For some recent pieces she has also relief carved the surfaces of the vessels.

Her main body of work is a collection of one-off cylinder vases that can be grouped together. In addition to this she has created a collection of standing stones and birds in black stoneware with incised abstract patterns.

She has always loved mid century design and artists of that period and they have a great influence on her ceramic work. She admires the freedom of their mark making and abstract pattern and use of colour.
