Michael Frank is Skylark Galleries 2’s next Featured artist from 9-29 March. Michael is an ex advertising photographer doing fine art photography for a living. He says, “It’s the only thing I really love to do and I’m good at it (so they say).” We second that! He talks to us here about his practice.
What have been seminal experiences for you?
A photographic assignment in a hospital covering a liver transplant surgery.
Also, taking a portrait of Oliver Sacks and Italian Nobel prize scientist Rita Levi-Montalcini.
How has your practice changed over time?
I shifted from being a commercial photographer working for clients with a very clear briefing to work very freely on self-assignments.
What’s your scariest experience?
Hanging from a helicopter to take photos.
What’s your most embarrassing moment?
Turning up to photo shoot without camera. It really happened.
What research to you do?
I don’t do research per se but I try to go to as much exhibitions as possible, read books about other artists and their practice and get inspired by films and music.
What is your dream project?
Travel the world in a camper van equipped as a photographic studio and portrait people.
Favourite or most inspirational place?
Rome for its magic and New York for its buzz and energy.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Don’t follow any advice.
Professionally, what’s your goal?
Enjoying my practice and trying to create something new and beautiful.
What wouldn’t you do without?
Books, camera, music.
Do you have any other shows coming up?
I’m taking part with Skylark Galleries at the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead, London from the 30th of April to the 4th of May 2020. https://www.saatchiart.com
