North London-based artist Smita Sonthalia is the newest member of Skylark Galleries and has been practising art for 18 years. Born in India, Smita draws inspiration from nature, spiritualism and women. Her paintings have been exhibited at many solo/group exhibitions and art fairs in Singapore, India & UK.
Smita says: “Art is not only my profession, but also my passion, which keeps my thoughts alive and gives me immense energy and positivity.”
Do you have any exhibitions coming up in the next six months?
I’m really looking forward to the following exhibitions: the Parallax Art Fair in July, Harrow Open studios, New Artists Art fair, Pinner Sketch Club and Harrow Arts Society in September or October. Hopefully the pandemic will be behind us and people will come out again to enjoy art.
I am also very excited about a new Folk art kit that I’m co-developing with another artist that we intend to launch in August.
How has your practice changed over time?
In the early days of my painting, my artworks were mostly on oil. Over time I came to prefer acrylic due to its sheer versatility. I have also become much more experimental trying layering, textures and abstraction to produce a unique piece every time.
What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
I was a fashion designer with a fashion studio for a brief period!
What memorable responses have you had to your work?
I am humbled by the amazing feedback from my patrons. In reference to a commission, a customer said that I had coloured her dream on canvas. That’s very fulfilling.
Are there stories behind the two artworks you have selected to appear here?
Amor Por Las Flores means ‘love for flowers’. Since childhood I have been curious about how to bring the beauty of flowers to walls, so that it doesn’t go away. In order to capture the colours, details and immense delicacy of flowers, I recreate them on my canvas with curvy moves and soft lines. Every flower has its own charm, and I bring that charm to my work through my process. It’s a journey which brings me closer to nature .
What is your dream project?
A project where I can express my innermost thoughts, like a free bird flying higher and higher.
Professionally, what’s your goal?
Every painting is a goal in itself. I strive to give 100% to create a unique and beautiful piece. I achieve my goal when my customers and well-wishers are moved – by joy or emotion – on seeing the painting.
